I made this photo earlier this year in the spring, after all the browns of winter had been pushed away by the new life and fresh greens of spring.
I’m not one to title the photos I make anymore, but it’s something that as a photographer we have to do and so, I call it “Big Oak Spring.”
This old tree has borne witness to so many people saying their vows and “I do’s” over the years at Rockhurst Farm. It’s got a special history from being present for so many moments, and a kind of gravity that only comes through in photographs.
This is my seventh season working weddings at Rockhurst Farm. Time hasn’t dulled the sense of awe I get around the tree, and it feels like a special privilege each day to play some small role in its care and keeping—both physically and with photography.
I have plans to make two more prints of this tree in the coming months, in keeping with the grand nature of the Big Oak, but I’ll tell you about those later.
